  • New shootoff rule

    14.5.2.2

If both archers score a 10 (recurve) or X (compound) on their first shoot - off arrow, then the match would be considered a tie and a second shoot - off arrow will be needed to resolve the match. Any subsequent shoot - off arrows will then be decided by closest to the centre to declare a winner.
We have a new shootoff rule coming in (April 1st I believe)
Note it stipulates only if an X on compound and 10 on recurve. NOT if it's a tied score on the first arrow. So if 2 compound archers score 10's on that first arrow it's still closest to the middle.

and if both recurvers shoot a 10 with their first and second arrows, it's closest to the centre on the second arrow only. even if there was a clear closest-to-the-middle winner on the first arrow.

presumably that made sense to someone.

Correct. The rule seems pretty clear.

Is it required? Dunno about that. You can shoot a better first shot and still lose.

You neglected to mention rule 14.5.2.2 (a)

Archers may elect to forgo a subsequent shoot off and determine the winner in trial by combat, where upon each archer will start back to back, walk twenty paces as directed by the Director of Shooting and then turn and loose. The first archer to lose consciousness will be declared the loser. Prior to the shootoff commencing, another archer may volunteer as tribute.

Well, it used to go to three shoot-off arrows, with closest on the middle only if it was still tied after the third. So you could have shot better arrows the first two ends and then lose your match on the third shot. Which they stopped as it made shoot-offs too long, though I'm sure they looked at the statistics to see how often shoot-offs went 10-10 (x-x for compounds) to see how often this might be an issue...
