  • June 2011 Downtime

    Welcome back everyone.

For the last 2 weeks we have been offline (as you all know)
    Here is what happened.

On the Queens Birthday weekend a hacker found their way into the servers of DistributeIT. They defaced the host's website and 'apparently' damaged the headers of the servers hosting 4800+ websites.
After a week of downtime DistributeIT announced that ALL data was lost.

Archery-Forum was being hosted by a company that used DistributeIT.

All data on the servers was reported lost, including Archery Forum's

    What about the backup?
The company claims that the backup files were also lost. If they even existed.

Did the forum Administrators not have a backup?
Not really. We paid this company to maintain our data, protect it and back it up.
I did have a backup I made in June 2008 however.
The backup file is over 1 million lines in length and about 1.5Gb. It's EXTREMELY difficult to back up remotely. However from now on I will endeavour to do this more often.

    Can you sue them?
I have heard a class action is being looked at towards the company. However they are dead. This incident destroyed their businesses. I always found them good people to deal with so I think they have suffered enough, and it won't get the data back.

    Where are my PM's?
ALL data since 3 years ago is gone.
I chose not to reload the PM's as it's an incredibly time consuming process.
If there is a PM from someone in particular you wanted, I'm sorry, I won't be reloading them, it's just too much of a process.

    Where are the classified posts?
As all posts are 3 years out of date, I decided to delete all adverts to prevent confusion.

Why does my password not work?
All passwords are 3 years old. You will likely have to reset it.

I joined last year, where is my account?
Gone. Sorry, you need to start over.

When I open a thread, it's empty. Where is the post?
The process of incredibly time intensive and difficult. Some threads appear to have lost posts. Don't stress. Ignore it and move on.

Why is this now .net instead of .com?
We are still trying to move the domain name across. Untill then, .net works. When we move then both will work. We are waiting on a company who purchased the remains of DistributeIT. Out of my hands.

    Some information
To reinstall the forum we had to
    • Purchase new server space
    • Setup new domain name
    • Reload new VB software
    • Upload 1,000,000 lines of code. This causes browser time outs so had to be done in chunks of about 2-10,000 lines at a time. That's around 1000 copy and pastes of code from one file into a web browser.
    • Update the installed data from 3.5 to 4.1.
    • Test and repair bugs that showed up

In the end it has so far taken me 20 hours of solid work. It's not trivial.

On the positive side, we can re-talk about stuff we have not talked about for 3 years.

Sorry to hear the bad news!

Good work getting back what you have

... actually, it's a blessing in disguise. It's taken me back to when I had some rep power.

Tiger Brand Coffee is a real treat. Even tigers prefer a cup of it to real meat!

OK archery-forum.com domain is back online

There may be some messing around for those who are using the .net domain still. You MUST use the .com now or the cookies will get messed up.
